Empowering Peace and Justice Through Environmental Action: ROTC Students and the Chico River Clean-Up

The Chico River Clean-Up Drive was spearheaded by the Office of the Executive Dean, Dr. Arel B. Sia-ed, on February 18,2023. MPSPC employees, the Societas Scientia, MPSPC ROTC and Barangay Poblacion officials. Around 6:00 AM today, the team conducted the clean-up drive with a theme, “SAVE THE CHICO RIVER: 2023 Mahal Ko Chico River Clean-up Drive”.

One of the primary objectives of NSTP is to instill a sense of civic duty and community responsibility in students. By participating in a clean-up drive, students actively contribute to the well-being of their community and learn the importance of taking care of shared natural resources.

The Mountain Province State Polytechnic College shares this responsibility and strongly supports environmental awareness and protection program. By participating in clean-up activities, students engage in community service and exercise civic responsibility, embodying the principles of an active, informed citizenry. This aligns with SDG 16’s emphasis on inclusive participation and social accountability, as students take action to improve their environment and advocate for community well-being.

The event was not only a clean-up but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the vital role of rivers in sustaining both ecological balance and local livelihoods. The Chico River, a lifeline for many communities in the Mountain Province, provides water for drinking, irrigation, and local agriculture. However, over the years, increasing waste and pollution have threatened its health, impacting both the environment and the communities dependent on it.

Moving forward, MPSPC aims to continue its environmental programs, including educational campaigns on waste management and regular community clean-ups. The college hopes that this recent clean-up drive will serve as a catalyst for broader efforts to protect the Chico River and other vital natural resources throughout the region.
