Tuition Fee Increases and Student Consultation: A Path to Transparency and Fairness

Student leaders from the various academic departments of both Bontoc and Tadian campuses attended a consultation on the Proposed Tuition Fee Increase of SOLID NORTH-SUCs. CHED-CAR Education Supervisor Dr. Patricio Dinamling also attended the exercise.

Dr. Mark Preston Lopez, the Vice President for Academic Affairs gave the opening remarks. Mr. Rexon Damayan, the College Accountant, presented the current rates of tuition fees of the College while Dr. Arel B. Sia-ed, the Executive Dean for Bontoc Campus presented the Proposed Tuition Fee increase by the SOLID NORTH-SUCs.

MPSPC officials laid out why it is necessary to increase the tuition, which includes maintaining institutional sustainability and ensuring that the college can continue offering a competitive and high-quality educational experience. In addition, the proposed TFI was backed up and cleared by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Memorandum Order, and the official statement release which states that Article I, Section 1 requires schools to adjust tuition and other fees reasonably to ensure the sustainability of school operations while taking into account regional inflation rates.

Consulting students on a potential tuition fee increase is crucial for several reasons, as it ensures that their voices are heard and their needs are considered in the decision-making process. It also allows students to engage in governance and advocacy, giving them a platform to voice their opinions and influence decisions. This aligns with broader goals of civic engagement and democratic participation.
